It’s been too long since I’ve sent a newsletter!
Summer is a perfect time to share my latest news—starting with a behind-the-scene story about my middle-grade futuristic mystery MEMORY TRAP.
Remember my book MEMORY GIRL? If you read it—thank you!! Unfortunately, thanks to Covid, the publisher shut down and the book went out of print. Now what? I worried. Enter my friend Lynne Marie, who was an editor at that time for Clear Fork Publisher. She showed MEMORY GIRL to her publisher and the editor loved it! I was offered a contract and eagerly awaited the paperback edition.
But then I discovered that Amazon would not take down the old listing for MEMORY GIRL, due to secondhand sales. So we came up with the idea to rename the book—which is why it’s now called MEMORY TRAP. And the cover was designed by a very talented new illustraor, Dea Lenihan. I described the scene I’d always imagined for the cover and Dea drew it beautifully—including Jennza’s creature friend, Petal. https://lindajoysingleton.com/memory-trap
SUN & SON opens with the words RISE and SHINE as a boy enjoys a special day with his father beneath a nurturing sun. I’m very proud of this book and LOVE the illustrations by Richard Smythe. Fun facts: Richard’s first child—a son—was born while he was illustrating this book. And Richard includes a cat in the art because he knows I love cats.
I’ve added of fun things to www.LindaJoySingleton.com including educational activities, advice for authors, and my interview with a puppet. And stay tuned for CURIOUS CAT SPY CLUB news—I’m almost finished writing a new book which I plan to self-publish for fans.
Have a great summer!
Linda Joy Singleton
Sometimes I'm asked about that first sale, the most memorable one, the one that changed my life from aspiring writer to published author.

Since I have kept diaries and journals most of my life, I have that monumental day recorded. And here it is:

FIRST SALE JOURNAL NOTES:

August 15, 1988 – I’m running off final Chapter of ALMOST TWIN off. I still haven’t heard anything from editor or agent. Not even more rejections – I’m glad of that anyway.

August 18, 1988 – Sent TWIN out to Willowisp yesterday. Wish I knew what was going on with them. I want to be published so much that I’m perpetually upset over it—never far from my thoughts.

September 16, 1988 – I am in shock…I guess. I can barely think. I’m afraid to. I had THE CALL. From Willowisp. I don’t even remember her name. When she said “Willowisp” my mind raced. Nothing definite, of course, but she likes TWIN. She’s going to present it at a meeting next Weds. Then she'll call me. Wow! My critique group meets next Weds—what an ironic situation considering I always dreamed of being called ruing my critique meeting. But I’ll be devastated if the answer is “no.”
The funny thing is I’ve been expecting a call. I just couldn’t see them turning down all 3 stories. I know they’re good. But I feel ashamed-scared-to admit I expected to make it. Now I have to. HAVE TO!

September 21, 1988 – WEDS
The house is clean. The kids are at school. My weight is down…since I’m too nervous to eat. Will I get THE CALL? If so, WHEN? If so, will the answer be YES?
1:20PM – No call…yet. There’s still hope, but it’s dwindling fast…Why don’t they call? And I won’t be home tomorrow. Call! Call! Call! I need to know. I’m afraid to check the mail, leave the house for any reason. It’s already 4:30 on the East Coast—maybe too late already. Damn! I hate this!

2PM – No call. I’m a failure. I feel so wretched.

2:30 PM – I’m accepting the fact that there won’t be a phone call today. I’m miserable. I can’t feel bad forever. Writing isn’t easy. But I can’t give up. I know TWIN, PENNY and MILKY WAY are good stories.

7:15PM – HEARD FROM WILLOWSIP. Talked to Teri for nearly an hour. I have to rewrite everything; younger than I’m used to. I’m scared, but know I can do it.

ALMOST TWINS was published in 1991. My first book.
PENNY never sold.
MILKY WAY was completely rewritten and the first book in the DEAD GIRL WALKING trilogy (2008--20 years later)

Recently I had 2 rejections, but it was balanced by 1 acceptance.

Rejections hurt momentarily, but they are proof of hard work and stepping stones to publication.

Rating Your Rejections

by

Linda Joy Singleton (Updated from 1998/2018)

How many times have we heard these phrases:

"It's not right for our list."
"This isn't quite what we're looking for."

"It doesn't meet current editorial needs."

"It does not fit into our publishing program."

"We are not accepting new manuscripts at this time."

Or the familiar, "We wish you success in placing it elsewhere."

The dictionary defines rejection as "to cast from one, to throw away; a person or thing rejected as not up to standard." Which is almost as vague as the familiar phrases we hear from editors when they return our manuscripts.

But what do rejections really mean? What is the coded message behind the inexplicit explanation? Where exactly did we go wrong when submitting? Did we send it to the wrong publisher? Was our writing weak? Our plotting poor? Or was the editor just in a foul mood that day?

There's no crystal ball with the magic answers, but the next time you receive a rejection, turn the tables around. Put on your editor's cap, and you be the Reviewer.

RATE YOUR REJECTIONS:
Your rejection - only silence for so long you realize it’s a “no.”

TRANSLATED:

The publisher is undoubtedly swamped, and they may only be accepting agented material. Research their submission policies. Then, before resubmitting to them, query first with a short letter. Always be sure to include a SASE (Self-addressed, stamped envelope).

You receive a reply with only a short “no thanks” type comment. This feels like they hated your manuscript, hated your ideas, and most probably hate you but actually it’s a good thing.

Any reply is better than no reply. Give yourself a few days to cool down, (okay, weeks) then calmly read through the rejection again. Note any constructive criticism and rewrite if warranted. Do not take rejections personally because there's no room for hurt feeling in this business. Remember, writing IS a business. Always be professional.
A bland form letter. Thanks, but no thanks

These impersonal replies are the result of publishers not having the time for chatty explanations. It's not their job to critique your work. Still, some publishers are more considerate in their form rejections and return a checklist of reasons for the rejection. When this happens, take note of the situation and learn from it. Study the market thoroughly, then submit somewhere else.

A form letter with a personal note. "We loved the premise, disliked the execution. The plot was interesting, but weak. The characters were stereotyped, the dialogue stilted, and the subplots confusing. But we liked it, and would be interested to see it again--after a rewrite."

They took the time to critique your work. This is a wonderful sign! Someone out there appreciates your writing. Whether you decide to rewrite is your choice, but just receiving a personal reply is a step up on your career ladder. You may pat yourself on the back.

No form letter, but the real thing. A personal letter written just for you. It's still a rejection, but it offers hope for a real sale.
TRANSLATED:

The editor not only likes your writing, but she wants to work with you. She loves your style, your ideas, and your manuscript. She'd buy it but (a) the publisher just purchased a similar piece; (b) the list is full; (c) she's moving to another publisher, but if you'd care to submit it there, she'd love to see it again.

If you study your rejections, you can turn them into a positive, not a negative, experience. Then maybe the next letter you receive won't be a rejection, but an acceptance, complete with a contract and a check.
Linda is the author of over 50 children’s books. She began writing as a child, filling notebooks with stories about a cat named Taben and girl-sleuth mysteries. It wasn't until she had children of her own that she learned about marketing, critique groups and how to become a professional writer. She writes almost daily and attends writing conferences whenever possible. A frequent speaker, she LOVES to speak about writing -- to both kids and adults.Linda Joy Singletonhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/04725925506263914352noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7841201.post-84425235693664898022018-07-11T14:13:00.001-07:002018-07-11T14:13:25.994-07:00READING IS FUN, NOT MENTAL: Greetings from Somewhere, Book 10 - The Mystery of...READING IS FUN, NOT MENTAL: Greetings from Somewhere, Book 10 - The Mystery of...: Italy, France, China, Kenya, India, Peru, Australia, Alaska, and now Greece - these two young twins, Ethan and Ella Briar, have certainly tr...Linda Joy Singletonhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/04725925506263914352noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7841201.post-60351755502331492122018-07-06T07:23:00.001-07:002018-07-06T07:23:45.972-07:00Cynsations: Guest Post: Linda Joy Singleton on Novels to Pictu...Cynsations: Guest Post: Linda Joy Singleton on Novels to Pictu...: By Linda Joy Singleton for Cynthia Leitich Smith 's Cynsations When I joined SCBWI , my biggest dream was to sell a middle-grade n...Linda Joy Singletonhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/04725925506263914352noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7841201.post-26690357278113417422018-06-08T15:07:00.001-07:002018-06-08T15:07:14.749-07:00Nancy Drew Sleuth: Nancy Drew and the Hidden Staircase Filming Update...Nancy Drew Sleuth: Nancy Drew and the Hidden Staircase Filming Update...: Sophia (center) as Nancy on the set, permission to use from Warner Brothers Nancy Drew and the Hidden Staircase has begun filming in ...Linda Joy Singletonhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/04725925506263914352noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7841201.post-44380841472282704022018-05-22T16:48:00.001-07:002018-05-22T16:48:29.970-07:00Cynsations: Survivors: E.
